Research On The Impact Of Imported Intermediates On Export Quality Of Strategic Emerging Industries Based On The Perspective Of Product Conversion

Since China entered the World Trade Organization,import and export trade has soared.As an essential part of import trade,the scale of intermediate goods import has also realized a leap forward.In contrast to the booming import of intermediate goods,the quality of Chinese enterprises’ exported products is still relatively low.In the critical period of China’s economy into the "new normal",the development of high quality economy has become an indispensable requirement to follow the development of economic laws and the transformation and upgrading of modern manufacturing industry.Especially to promote the high-quality development of strategic emerging industries,whose industries are strategic,advanced and other characteristics,is the core area of China’s modern industrial competition,but also an important reflection of China’s comprehensive national power,whose industries have strategic,progressiveness and other characteristics,is regarded as the core area of China’s modern industrial competition,and is also an important embodiment of China’s comprehensive national power.At a time when trade in intermediate goods is booming,how to promote the high-quality development of strategic emerging industries and complete the transformation of China’s trade power to a strong country is the key to building a strong quality country and a strong trade country.Combines the data of intermediate goods imports,product quality,product conversion and export product quality of strategic emerging industries with the 2000-2013 China Customs Import and Export Database,Industrial Enterprises Database and United Nations Trade Database to reveal the impact of intermediate goods imports on the export product quality of strategic emerging industries with different product conversion types,this paper estimates the total import volume of intermediate goods,product density,product conversion,and export product quality of strategic emerging industries.It reveals the impact of intermediate goods import on the quality of export products of strategic emerging industries with different product conversion types.On the basis of relevant literature,this paper proposes that the import of intermediate goods mainly affects the export product quality of strategic emerging industries through three channels: quality effect,competition effect and technology overflow effect.At meanwhile,the influence mechanism of product switching effect on export product quality is further explored.Finally,an empirical test is conducted to construct relevant econometric models to further analyze the relationship between intermediate product imports,product conversion,and export product quality of strategic emerging industries.The results show that intermediate goods import has a positive effect on the export product quality of Chinese strategic emerging industries during the sample period.By discussing the different types of product switching,it was found that intermediate imports positively influenced the product quality of firms that continued to export,increased exports,and reduced export product categories.After distinguishing product differentiation,it is found that homogenized products are more affected by intermediate imports when enterprises continue to export products and increase export products,but less affected when reducing product types.Different product conversion behaviors under imported intermediate goods all make the quality of heterogeneous products export products improve.The overall development of China’s strategic emerging industry exports has steadily improved,with rapid development in the ten major segments of strategic emerging industries,but there is a certain gap in the development of industries;After considering the intra-firm product correlation and product conversion,it is found that the original factor endowment of enterprises’ exports has an impact on their export product conversion behavior.The average product density of enterprises significantly improves their export quality and drives the upgrading of their export products by promoting product conversion behavior.According to the research findings,this paper puts forward policy recommendations in four aspects: implementing active import trade policies,cultivating differentiated products,developing industries according to local conditions,and promoting industrial integration and cluster development.
