In the context of high-quality development, the process of new urbanisation, mainly in the form of metropolitan area construction, continues to advance. The coupling and synergy of industrial spatial organisation and regional development, the formation of a good spatial correlation pattern between industries on the basis of regional specialisation of industries, and the resulting increase in economic integration have become an important breakthrough in tapping the regional spatial dividend, boosting economic efficiency and achieving the goal of high-quality balanced development against the background of structural economic slowdown and waning demographic dividend nowadays. The study of the impact of China’s industrial spatial organisation on economic growth can provide some reference for cities in metropolitan areas to clarify their functional positioning as well as their economic development path. The purpose of this paper is to study the impact of industrial spatial organisation on economic growth within a metropolitan area.Firstly,it systematically reviews the relevant literature at home and abroad to clarify the connotation of industrial spatial organization and the influence mechanism on economic growth.Secondly,it measures, compares and analyses the level of industrial spatial specialisation,inter-industrial spatial correlation and regional urban economic growth in China’s metropolitan areas, starting from the productive service sector and the manufacturing sector, which have an "input-output" relationship. Finally, the effects of industrial spatial organisation on regional economic growth are explored in terms of industrial spatial specialisation and inter-industrial spatial linkages;a mediating effect model is constructed to study the internal mechanism of industrial spatial organisation in metropolitan areas affecting economic growth through the channel of industrial structure optimisation;a moderating effect model is constructed to explore the effects of city informatization level and inter-city transport infrastructure on the effects of industrial spatial organisation on economic growth. The moderating effect model is constructed to explore the moderating effect of city informatization level and inter-city transportation infrastructure on the effect of industrial spatial organization on economic growth. The findings show that the division of labour is a central feature of the spatial organisation of industry and that the spatial organisation of industry has a significant impact on economic growth.Specifically:(1)At the city level, the central cities are mainly specialised in productive service functions, while the peripheral cities are mainly specialised in general manufacturing functions, and the spatial correlation between industries in the peripheral cities is smaller than that in the central cities.(2)From the full sample level, industrial spatial specialisation can influence economic growth by adjusting industrial structure, and there is a significant inverted U-shaped relationship between the two;inter-industrial spatial association has a non-negative linear growth relationship with economic growth;the increase in the level of information technology(year-end number of mobile phones)in the city and the improvement of transport infrastructure with other cities(the opening of high-speed rail)will strengthen the positive influence of inter-industrial spatial association on economic growth.(3)At the level of central cities and peripheral cities, the influence of industrial spatial specialization on economic growth in peripheral cities shows an inverted U-shaped trend, but the influence on central cities is positive but the inverted U-shaped trend is not significant;inter-industrial spatial association is not significant for the separate subsample of central cities or the sub-sample of peripheral cities, and the improvement of the level of urban informatization and transportation facilities is conducive to strengthening the effect of interindustrial spatial association on economic growth.(4)At the level of the twelve metropolitan areas, the impact of industrial spatial specialisation and inter-industrial spatial linkages on urban economic growth shows diverse heterogeneity due to significant differences among cities in terms of population, resources, environment as well as services and policies.
