Urban rail transit is an essential component of the urban public transportation network that has a significant impact on both the daily commutes of city dwellers and the regular operations of the city. With the increase of the operating mileage and network scale, the operation of urban rail transit network is faced with interference and destruction from various events, such as natural disasters, social security and facilities and equipment failures. The occurrence of above events will not only interrupt the operation of line stations or tracks, but also reduce travel efficiency, seriously affect the passenger’s travel safety and the normal operation order of the network, and bring serious challenges to the safe operation of the rail transit network.A new point on how to manage the operation and security of an urban rail transit network is provided by the concept and practice of resilience. From a practical perspective, evaluating the resilience of the urban rail transit network and suggest appropriate ways to improve resilience are very important. This study evaluates the urban rail transit network’s resilience through a thorough application of the theories and methods of complex networks, system resilience, and passenger flow distribution. The definition of urban rail transit resilience is sorted out,the connotation of urban rail transit network resilience is defined, and its influencing factors are analyzed. The undirected weighted network model of urban rail transit is constructed, and the network attack scenarios and emergency recovery strategy are set up.On this basis, combined with passenger travel behavior selection, from the perspective of passenger service level, the performance evaluation index is constructed by considering both passenger travel demand satisfaction and passenger accessibility level, and the resilience triangle is used to measure the resilience.Taking Xi’an rail transit as an example, based on the relevant data of Xi’an rail transit network topology, train operation schedule, weekday passenger flow, station turn-back capacity and so on,the proposed resilience evaluation model is applied and verified, and combined with the temporal and spatial characteristics of events, the resilience level of urban rail transit network is explored at different locations and times.According to the analysis of Xi’an rail transit network resilience evaluation results, aiming at different stages of events response, this paper puts forward universal strategies to improve the resilience of urban rail transit network from the perspective of resistance, absorption and recovery ability of resilience connotation. The main research conclusions of this paper are as follows:(1)Due to the change of passenger flow in time and space, there are differences in the resilience level of urban rail transit networks with interruptions occurring at different times of morning and evening peak, exhibiting certain spatiotemporal characteristics;(2)The impact of emergencies on the performance of rail transit networks varies depending on the topological importance of interrupted stations or tracks,turn-back configuration, passenger flow, and network alternatives. The stations or tracks with low network resilience are mostly located at transfer stations and their adjacent sections,as well as large passenger flow stations and their adjacent sections at the edge of the network;(3)The impact of complete station interruption on the performance of urban rail transit network is higher than that of track interruption. When multiple stations are interrupted at the same time, the higher the importance of stations, the greater the impact on the performance of urban rail transit network.
