Geographic information system (GIS) has been widely applied and generalized in numerous fields since it was founded in the sixties of the twentieth century. With the rapid development of information collection systems, GIS will hold gigantic database and make a powerful measure for city planning and city grow. But at present, GIS could only generally analyze spatiotemporal data, which though covers mechanism analysis to a certain extent, is incapable of analyzing complex systems and is incapable of expressing characteristics of special distribution.Self-Organization Theory is a theory of systemic science, which develops step by step after systematology, information ism and cybernetics. It provides new ideas, new viewpoints and new measures for development of technology of the time. It provides wide thinking interspace for the complex social science as well.GIS, to a certain extent, is a technology to trace practical systematic information. Self-Organization Theory is a science to investigate the self-organizing disciplinarian of system. The dissertation expatiates the basic principle and the interrelated conception, takes apart the disadvantage of conventional GIS spatial analyst, and builds mathematic model of practical problem. So it combines the two subjects, utilizes GIS to the fullest extent, and provides a possibility of analyzing mechanism of complex system. At the meantime, the dissertation will perform mathematic calculations of the problem and it' s inverse one, and will analyze self-organizing spatiotemporal structure in order to find the collection of parameters and structural mutation, which makes us to understand the system much more profoundly.Based on making use of the GIS spatial data fully, well and efficiently, and excavating the connotative mechanism, the dissertation brings forward a self-organizing view of cities, analyses the evolvement characteristics of the cities and displays the growing rules of the cities' self-organizing phenomena. So it can offer more valuable information for city planning. The dissertation suggests a new method of processing GIS spatiotemporal data and building mathematic models by combining the Self-Organization and modern mathematic techniques to analyze the problems of cities, which is potential to be the core content of city planning and will promotes city planning more scientific and more exercisable.A simple and perfect stimulant model of city evolvement is illustratedin the dissertation. The application is discussed from theory and demonstration. It is a new spatiotemporal data processing method that has special good qualities and characteristics. It will be the powerful data processing tool of GIS decision support system.
