This paper chiefly discussed the causes of formation of the red-bed in Hefei City, which can be classified three genus: Geologic conformation factor, rock factor and climate - time factor. Collecting and sorting lots of information about boring in He- fei City and other data, we can find out the spatial distribution and the depth of the red-bed in He- fei City. Ulteriorly, the equal-depth map of the red-bed in Hefei can be made. Furthermore, the paper completely studied the composition, the lithologic characters and the hydro-geological condition of the red-bed in Hefei City, and a lot of tests about rock's physical and mechanical property had been done. It showed that the structure feature of the red-bed was a inner factor to decide its physical and mechanical property, however, the external factors, such as weathering, water-rock action and the faulted zone etc, had an important influence on the engineering geo- logical condition of the red-bed. Acording to the distriburing, embedment depth, thichness of the weathered zone and its mechanical strength, we can synthetically evaluate the red-bed in Hefei.It can be divided into four districts: the more favorable, the favorable, the normal and the inferio. The conclusions were not only favorable to city planning and building, but also significant to developing the engineering geologic theory of soft rock and to well mastered the engineering geological property of the red-bed.
