It is indicated in the relevant documents of UN that more than 80 percent of information is related to geospatial information after we step into the information society. The geospatial information is a tool for achieving sustainable development. In recent years, China has also brought forward that the fundamental geospatial information database is of great importance in building the nation's four largest databases. As an essential part of national fundamental geographic information, provincial fundamental geographic information is a significant indicator of the infomationization degree of a province. Confronted with the already accumulated and trillionbytely increasing fundamental geographic data, scientific and effective storage management is needed in order to provide more efficient social services. Hence, the demand of fundamental gepspatial database is becoming more and more impendent.Based on the project of'Construction of Fundamental Geographic Information Database in Shaanxi Province'and combined with the development of new technologies, this paper aims to build a province-wide, multi-scale, multi-type and easily shareable fundamental geographic database with the advantages of uniform data storage, high degree of standardization, extensively applicability of services, which will provide basic digital scheme for "Digital Shaanxi" and basic geospatial data for various GIS applications.This paper is organized as follows:(1) analyzing the background and signification of the research; (2) presenting the related theories about the fundamental geographic information database construction;(3)expatiating the selected data model and data storage method in this paper; (4)intensively investigating the key technologies of the fundamental geographic information database construction, i.e., Geodatabase spatial data model and ArcSDE spatial database engine;(5)studying and discussing the data storage scheme for provincial fundamental geographic information database construction. Under the concrete demand of fundamental geographic information database construction in Shaanxi Province, database general design, logic design, physical design and data backup and recovery are considered. Based on these elementary theories and by means of technology, an general framework is given. The fundamental geographic information management platform is realized and successfully applied into the operation of Shaanxi fundamental geographic information. Finally, outcomes of the thesis are given and the further research contents are discussed.
