The 67% of national energy needs satisfied by coal, that caused accidents when dig. These accidents generated great damage to the nation. To meet the demand of the economic growth of the country, the safe of the cola mine have become the focal point of the national industrial security. The useful action distance of currently traditional RFID technology is too short for localization. The huge challenge of coal mine safe monitoring system is how to solve the limited distance of wireless communication and transmit the temperature and humidity and the consistency of gas to the central control center. Endeavor to apply WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) to the coal mine safe monitoring system will be the emphasis of future exploitation of coal industry.This paper elaborated the key technology of WSN and introduced a new WSN which aim at monitoring the temperature, humidity, and the gas' consistency of the coal mine, which contains software and hardware design. Hardware consisted of portable sensor node which contained the application circuit of gas sensors and humiture sensor and base station sensor node which contained the RS485 bus and external sensors and so on. Software implemented data acquisition of the sensor nodes and the communication between nodes. Moreover, the paper achieved the designing of wireless communication based on IEEE802.15.4/ZigBee standard.As an approved project of SIAT(Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology), the project has achieved the data acquisition of the mine's humiture and the consistency of gas, Which attained the purpose of safe monitoring of coal mine, Which put forward the use of WSN to our life and have more signification to the safe monitoring of coal mine.
