Port quayside container cranes are the main container-handing gears in wharf, the advantage and disadvantage of the capabilities have great deep influence on loading and unloading efficiency of container crane. The design of luffing gear is a crucial procedure to improve the efficiency of container crane, the advantage and disadvantage has a great influence on the movement capability, reliability and economy of the crane as a whole. Now there are two main kinds of port quayside container cranes: the bridge cranes and the portal cranes. The bridge crane has high working efficiency and large working range but high cost, while the portal cranes are in the opposite way.The jib-bridge crane has obvious superiority with high efficiency, large working range and low cost which are the advantages of both bridge crane and portal crane. The jib-bridge luffing gear is the typical character and main working machine of the jib-bridge crane. The mechanics properties of its metal structure, such as stiffness, strength and stability, have a direct influence on whole crane's function. So it is important to design a proper metal structure which not only can meet the need of work, but also has high economy after the project design of the crane finished.For the purpose of finding the way of metal structure design of the jib-bridge luffing gear, first, the paper takes the JQ5025 jib-bridge crane as the example for design and calculates the forces loaded on it. Next, this paper gives 3 different kinds of structure forms of the jib-bridge luffing gear, and their original geometrical sizes also given. After that, the FEA-models of these different structures are been built and analyzed by using the famous CAE software, ANSYS. Then, modify the geometrical sizes of each structure according to the results observed though ANSYS, making sure every structure can meet the requirements of their mechanics properties. Finally, compare the mechanics properties of each structure, finding out which one has the best quality and chose it as the final plan.The jib-bridge Port quayside container crane is a brand-new crane, the forces loaded on it are very different than other cranes, and now there are no knowledge on how todesign this new crane. So the greatest innovation of this paper is having designed thecrane successful, and found a way on how to design the luffing gear of this kindcrane.The accomplishment of the jib-bridge crane is a significant innovation. It can't besubstituted by other kinds of cranes, and its emergence will result in the change of thetraditional situation of the container-handing equipment and procedure.
