Top drive drilling system is a new style drilling system, which is used to instead of the rotary table. Using of top drive drilling system develops a new type of drilling mode in the past 20 years, which has significant technical and economical advantages in the oil drilling.With the use of top equipment, the system allows and reduces make up and break time. When touching resistance and touching sticking, it may connect the drilling pipe immediately, rotating and circulating, and may reduce the sticking accidents. Meanwhile, it has been widely used and promoted. The series of VARCO is the most widely used top drive drilling system in the domestic oilfield presently.Currently, the top drive drilling system research has been basically matured, however for the reliability of the research need to be further improved. In this paper, I did the reliability analysis on the TDS-11SA Top drive drilling system that is one of the series of VARCO products. Fault tree analysis (FTA), an important branch in systems reliability engineering, is a common practical technique that was used in evaluating reliability and safety or large-complex systems at home and abroad presently. With gradual advancing techniques in computer, FTA is in a state of sound development.Based on learning through the functions, structure, working principles and the working conditions etc, using the fault tree analysis method, the fault of TDS-11SA top drive drilling system was analysis and fault tree was drawn. The minimum cut sets and the minimum path sets and the structure function were solved .According to the importance of structure function, the relative weak parts of the system were found out and provide reference for the designing and application, farther condition for the development of fault analysis system of top drive drilling system. At last I developed a failure probability calculation program by Visual C++.
