The devices included in start and brake of belt conveyor were analysed. The advantages and disadvantages of common actuators and brakes were compared, especially viscous liquid soft-start and self-cool plate brake, the electrical systems of them added. the principle and practice of which were studied,while PLC programming was designed. Viscous liquid soft-start is a kind of non-grade transmission device including machinery and hydraulic, in which power is transmited by liquid viscosity. When self-cool plate brake run, brake moment is generated by the fiction between brakeshoe and plate. Downward belt conveyor as the object of study, the processes of start, brake and power balance were detailed by flow chart. There are electric condition and generating ones in normal running and start process, as a result, the run condition of downward belt conveyor is complicated than that of upward belt conveyor or horizontal belt conveyor, requiring more credible electrical system. The electrical system based on PLC was designed, according to the run feature and special requirement of downward belt conveyor. According to the problems during the run of downward belt conveyor's electical system, improvements were put forward, which remove the hidden danger and raise prduction efficiency.
