Village doctors, supporting the basement of China 's Rural Three Tiered Health Care Network, are the key members to implement the rural cooperation health care system, resulting in great influences on the issues of health and health security among 0.9 billion rural people. So, the study focus on the village doctors has significant importance. But there are few reports on the comparative study on village doctors and the previous bare foot doctors. The survey was conducted among the village doctors, the previous bare foot doctors people in the know in Guandu County of Kunming City, Chengjiang County of Yuxi City and Shiping County of Honghe Prefecture. Many items related to village doctors and bare foot doctors were presented and analyzed comparatively, involving in age, sex proportion, training contents and intensity bom before and during the employment, types to provide service, equipments, withes and ideals, workloads, and administration. The findings show: 1) village doctors, compared to bare foot doctors, have improved much with the development of society; 2) athough not smoothly, the progresses on diseases prevention & control and maternal & child health care in Yunnan Province have been seen; 3) their abilities and techniques cannot fully satisfy the various health service demands from the mass populations.; 4)the education program for village doctors processes slowly; 5) infrastructure of health service at rural grass roots level should be strengthened; 6) Some village doctors' behaviors need to be regulated; 7) most of villagers do not have enough abilities against the risks from diseases among the rural people; 8) the advantages, the equal relationship between doctors and patients bom in the present and past time, should be continued; 9) the usage of TCM is lessened now. Focused on the above findings, combining with the reform practice of rural health system, the suggestions are indicated.
