Objective: To study the correlation between apoptotic index (AI ,an incidence of apoptosis ) and intratumoral microvessel density(IMVD,a measurement of angiogenesis) in colorectal adenocarcinoma, and comparison between CD 105 and CD34 as a marker of angiogenesis. Methods: Sixty-two surgical specimens from colorectal adenocarcinomas tissue were studied. IMVDs were determind immunohistochemical S-P method with an antibody against a pan-endothelial marker,CD34(CD34IMVD) and an antibody against a proliferation-related endothelial marker,CD105(CD105IMVD). AI was definded as the number of tumor cells positve for the terminal deoxymuleotidyl tranferase-mediated Dutp-biotin nick and end-labeling (TUNED staining per 1,000 tumor cells. Results: CD34 was used as a marker of angiogenesis, the mean AIs for the lower-IMVD and the higher-IMVD patients were 4.67?.07 and 4.16 + 1.85 respectivly, demonstrating no significant deffernce between the lower-and the higher-IMVD patients; In contrast, when CD 105 was used, the mean AIs for the lower-IMVD patients were significantly higher than that for the higher-IMVD patients.( 5.03 ?.10 and 3.85 ?1.67 respectivly; /?=0.017<0.05).There was no significant correlation between proliferativeactivity and CD34-IMVD or CD105-IMVD.Conclusins:These results demonstrated that decreased angiogenesis may induce enhanced apoptotic tumor cell death without affecting cell proliferation.
