Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb., has been used for thetreatment of acute brain fever, measles and herpes zoster as a folkmedicinal herb. Pharmacological studies indicated that the extract of A.philoxeroides has antivirus, antibacterial and molluscicidal activities.Based on its pharmacology and clinical reseach, we have carried onrelevant experiments on it.The extraction and isolation from the whole plants of A.philoxeroides were accomplished and 20 constituents were isolated fromits petroleum ether fraction by various kinds of chromatographies, ninteenof them were elucidated on the basis of spectral data as follows:cyloeucalenol (Ⅰ), 24-methylene-cycloartanol (Ⅱ), steraric acid (Ⅲ),lignocericac (Ⅳ), oleanolic acid (Ⅴ), ursolic acid (Ⅵ),(24R)-5A-stigmast-3,6-dione (Ⅶ), stigmast-22-ene-3,6-dione (Ⅷ),2-hydroxy-3-methyl-anthraquinone (Ⅸ), 2-hydroxy-1-methoxyl-anthraquinone(Ⅹ),α-spinasterol (Ⅺ),β-sitosterol (Ⅻ), 5α-8α-epidioxy-(22E, 20S, 24R)-ergosta-6, 22-dien-3β-ol (ⅩⅢ),7-syn-acetoxy-5-exo-hydroxy-3-exo-methoycarbonyl-bicyclo[2,2,1]heptane-2,6-carbolactone (ⅩⅣ), tetracosanoic acid 2, 3-dihydroxypropyl ester(ⅩⅤ), hexacosanoic acid 2,3-dihydroxypropyl ester (ⅩⅥ), monostearin(ⅩⅦ), stigmasterol-3-0-β-D-glucopyranoside (ⅩⅧ),△5,22-stigmast-3-0-β-D-glucopyranosyl-6'-hexadecanoate (ⅩⅨ).CompoundⅣ,Ⅵ,Ⅶ,Ⅷ,Ⅸ,Ⅹ,ⅩⅣ,ⅩⅤ,ⅩⅥ,ⅩⅦ,ⅩⅨwere isolated forthe first time from Alternanthera philoxeroides and Alternanthera genus.Fractions were re-subjected to anti-human influenza virus (anti-HIV)and anti-hepatitis B virus (anti-HBV) screening, with the result thatpetroleum ether fraction could anti-HIV and anti-HBV to some degree. Atthe same time the compounds extracted from petroleum ether fraction were also tested in anti-HBV experiment and also got promising result thatmixture of compoundⅤandⅥwere very active in anti-HBV, compoundⅡ,Ⅲ,ⅩⅧ,ⅩⅨalso acquired some anti-HBV activity.After studying active compositions of Alternanthera philoxeroides,we have made more systematic research on it, including traitidentification, microscopic, identification, qualitative andquantitative analysis of oleanolic acid, upon which the quality standardwas established. The TLC identification according to the active fractionwas unique to some extent, and the quantitative analysis determined bythe mainly active constituent oleanolic acid was highly sensitive, wellrepeated and promisingly reliable. The study can effectively control itsquality.
