Blumea balsamifera DC (Compositae) is an aromatic hairy herb growing in Southeast Asia and has been reported to possess stomachic, expectorant, antispasmodic and sudorific properties. Its leaves and roots are used as a crude drug for beriberi, menorrhagia, leucorrhoea, lumbago, rheumatism and a variety of ailments. Previous phytochemical studies on B. balsamifera have revealed that it is a rich source of flavonoids.In this dissertation, we investigate the chemical constituents from the aerial parts of B. balsamifera which collected from Mengla, Yunnan. Thirty-three compounds were isolated from the aerial parts of B. balsamifera by silica gel, Sephadex LH-20 and polyacylamine chromatography and thirty-two compounds were identified as follows by spectral analysis: ANX-1:β-sitosterol ANX-2:daucosterol ANX-3:5α,8α-epidioxyergosta-6,22-dien-3β-ol ANX-4:umbelliferone ANX-5:hydranngetin ANX-6:syringaresinol ANX-7:dihydroquercetin-7,4′-dimethylether ANX-8:blumeatin ANX-9:dihydroquercetin-4′-methylether ANX-10:3,5,3′-trihydroxy-7,4′-dimethoxyflavone ANX-11:5,7,3′,5′-tetrahydroxyflavanone ANX-12:luteolin ANX-13:quercetin ANX-14:5,7-dihydroxy-3,3′,4′-trimethoxy flavone ANX-15:3,5,3′,4′-tetrahydroxy-7-methoxyflavone ANX-16:davidigenin ANX-17:catechin ANX-18:ayanin ANX-19:davidioside ANX-20:3,13-clerodadiene-6,15-diol *ANX-21:blumeaene A *ANX-22:blumeaene B *ANX-23:blumeaene C *ANX-24:blumeaene D *ANX-25:blumeaene E *ANX-26:blumeaene F *ANX-27:blumeaene G *ANX-28:blumeaene H *ANX-29:blumeaene I *ANX-30:blumeaene J *ANX-31:1,9-dihydroxy-4-eudesmen-6-one *ANX-32:1-ang-4,7-dihydroxyeudesmaneAmong them, ANX-14, ANX-15, ANX-16, ANX-17, ANX-18, ANX-19, and ANX-20 were isolated from this plant for the first time, ANX-21, ANX-22, ANX-23, ANX-24, ANX-25, ANX-26, ANX-27, ANX-28, ANX-29, ANX-30, ANX-31, and ANX-32 were new compounds.ANX-21, ANX-22, ANX-23, ANX-24, ANX-25, ANX-26, ANX-27, ANX-28, ANX-29, ANX-30, ANX-31, and ANX-32 were tested for inhibitory activities against LPS-induced NO production in RAW 264.7 macrophages. ANX-21, ANX-24, ANX-25, and ANX-31 showed inhibitory activities against the NO production with IC50 values of 40.06, 46.35, 57.80, and 59.44μg/mL, respectively.
