Objective: To study the relationship between the Chinese medicine syndromes of essential hypertension and pulse pressure index(PPI),left ventricular mass index (LVMI), exploring the relationship between blood pressure and vessel, cardiac damage, research the difference of syndrome and type in such patients, and which provide the dialectical way and the theoretical basis of combined medicine treatment. Methods: We selected SO cases, including 43 males and 37 females. We divided them into four Chinese medicine syndrome groups which include liver fire exuberant syndrome, phlegm dampness abundant syndrome, yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity syndrome, deficiency of Yin and Yang syndrome. 20 healthy people were taken as a normal control group, including 11 males and 9 females. We detected triacylglycerol (TG), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol(HDL-C), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDC-C); at the same time, we measured their height, weight, waistline, blood pressure and calculated BMI and BSA by formulas. All patients were observed by Color Doppler ultrasonography. We measured left ventricular end-diastolic diameter(LVDd), left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVDs), interventricular septum thickness (IVST), left ventricular posterior wall thickness(LVPWT), and calculated left ventricular mass(LVM), left ventricular mass index(LVMI).Results: 1. The PPI in EH group is higher than the control group (p<0.01), the heightening level of PPI was liver fire exuberant syndrome>phlegm dampness abundant syndrome >yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity syndrome>deficiency of Yin and Yang syndrome (p<0.05).2. The LVMI in EH group is higher than the control group (p<0.01), and the differences between the two groups was significant (p<0.05), the heightening level of LVMI was liver fire exuberant syndrome>phlegm dampness abundant syndrome >yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity syndrome> deficiency of Yin and Yang syndrome (p<0.05).3. The PP is positively correlated with PPI significantly in EH group(r=0.873), and the PPI is positively correlated with LVMI (r=0.579).Conclusions: 1. The excellent correlation of PPI with the LVMI can indicate that the increscent PPI will be a factor which may predict cardiac remodeling.2. The common Chinese medicine syndromes of essential hypertension shows the different period of pathophysiological in EH course. The difference of PPI that we can take it as one of the reference indexes of Chinese medicine dialectical typing in EH.3. The difference of LVMI that we can take it as one of the physical diagnostic indexes of Chinese medicine dialectical typing in EH.
