Objectives:(1)To understand health-promoting lifestyle, self-rated abilities for health practices, perceived health status, health conception and social support in middle-aged urban men from Changsha. (2)To analyse factors influencing health-promoting lifestyles in order to lay the foundations for formulating targeted interventions among middle-aged men.Methods:With cross-sectional design and through cluster sampling randomly,741 middle-aged urban men from Changsha were investigated by filling out Demographic Data Recording Form, Health-promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLPⅡ), Self Rated Abilities for Health Practices Scales (SRAHP), Short Form 36 Health survey Questionnaire (SF-36), Laffrey Health Conception Scale (LHCS) and Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) from September to December,2010. Statistic analysis methods included statistic description, t test, analysis of variance, Kruskal-Wallis H analysis, Spearman rank correlation analysis and multiple linear regressions, conducted by SPSS 16.0.Results:1. The health-promoting lifestyle score of middle-aged urban men in Changsha was 120.64±22.85.515 (69.5%) scored 129 and lower, which was known to be at a general level or even below. After standardizing the mean scores, Spiritual growth, Interpersonal relations, Stress management, Nutrition, Physical activity and Health responsibility were at a descending order successively.2. Self Rated Abilities for Health Practices Scales, Short Form 36 Health survey Questionnaire, Laffrey Health Conception Scale and Social Support Rating Scale of middle-aged urban men in Changsha scored 68.67±20.57,598.51±103.65,122.21±22.60 and 43.99±7.67 separately.3.Univariate analysis revealed that education level (H=44.026, P<0.01), occupation (F=5.838, P<0.01), payment of medical cost (F=19.098, P<0.01), monthly income (F=9.446, P<0.01), health care knowledge sources (t=3.086, P<0.01) and chronic disease situation (F=3.648, P<0.05) showed significant influences on health-promoting lifestyles in middle-aged men, self-rated abilities for health practices (r=0.587, P<0.01), perceived health status (r=0.282, P<0.01), health conception (r=0.286, P<0.01) and social support (r=0.325, P<0.01) were all correlated with health-promoting lifestyles positively, and also significantly.4. Multiple stepwise regression indicated that Exercise of SRAHP (β=0.268), Psychological well being of SRAHP (β=0.145), Nutrition of SRAHP (β=0.102), Bodily pain of SF-36 (β=0.098), payment of medical cost (β=-0.103), Health responsibility of SRAHP (β=0.147) and monthly income (β=0.079) were major influencing factors and explained 41.4% of the variance in health-promoting lifestyles.Conclusions:1. Health-promoting lifestyle of middle-aged urban men in Changsha was at a general level generally, with highest level of Spiritual growth and lowest level of Health responsibility.2. Exercise of SRAHP, Psychological well being of SRAHP, Nutrition of SRAHP, Bodily pain of SF-36, payment of medical cost, Health responsibility of SRAHP and monthly income were major influencing factors of health-promoting lifestyle of middle-aged urban men in Changsha.3. Further intervention measures are supposed to focus on improving health behavior self-efficacy of middle-aged men, helping them to improve the health self-management ability, finally promoting the formation of good health behaviours.
