The blackboard is an important classroom teaching aid that teachers use as a common means to achieve teaching objectives. The importance of blackboards in language teaching, particularly in Chinese language teaching is self-evident, especially in the initial stage of learning its role cannot be ignored. In the time when many modern tools have been widely used, the traditional chalk blackboard Foreign Language Centers in Vietnam still holds great importance. The researcher by analyzing the literature, observing the classroom and basing on the actual investigation, studied the use of blackboards in Vietnamese Foreign Language Centers and related factors in order to analyze and recommend initial designs.This paper consists of four parts. The first part is the introduction, the literature which summarizes the use of blackboards with the definition, function, types, and some basic principles of design. The second part is the investigation into the teaching and learning Chinese at Chinese learning centers in Vietnam as well as the detailed analysis of the fact. From these findings together with the basic principles of design of the blackboard and the situations of some foreign language centers in Vietnam, some certain particular principles are provided. The third part is based on the findings of the first two chapters, and with the basis of three stages of elementary Chinese learning:pronunciation, grammar, essay, a sub-set of three instances of using the blackboard are established. The last part is a summary of the findings and personal reflection.
