As a famous modern female novelist, Ling Shuhua has presented her characteristics in the artistic world. With her distinct retrospection, Ling dares to face the weaknesses in females, to expose and criticize the traditional value deep in females'mind, which attach solid historical and culture sense to her works about women. Employing a diversity of artistic devices, she combines the art of mental description in traditional Chinese novels with that in western literature, and thus is able to provide readers with a detailed and minute penetration into females'mentality. This shows her distinctive aesthetic ideal and pursuit of beauty. As for the narrative art, her maturity and perfection outgrow those of other female writers in her age, and she is one of the first modern female writers who concentrate on narrative art. Her transfer from an artist to a writer enriches the vividness of "embedding pictures in words"in her words. Ling develops her sphere in new literature with ingenuity and conception. Browsing her works, readers can feel the elegance and delicacy, which originate from her unique mentality as an artist writer, and that is just where the charm of the art and character of her novels lie.
