The Phonological Study Of Xiang Dialects In Shaodong County

Xiang dialects occupies very important status in studying in Chinese, but the research of Xiang dialects is still relatively weak and a large amount of dialect areas wait to be studied. Shaodong county which lies in the midst of Hunan has not received the attention of the academia all the time and lacked the systematic research materials. Considering that and on the basis of investigating in thelocality, we mainly describe the phonetic system of Liangshizhen dialect ------the county town of Shaodong, which is a representative of Shaodong Xiang dialects and divide Shaodong Xiang dialects into several districts. In addition, a comparison will be made among the Liangshizhen dialect and the peripheral dialects that try to analyze and explain why Shaodong dialects form the present unique appearance, which fill the study gap of Shaodong dialects.The full thesis falls into six parts altogether.The Introduction Part shows us the geography, the history, the population, the condition of language uses of Shaodong county briefly. It also introduces the present studies on the Shaodong dialects and the emphasis and the main purpose of our research.The first chapter describes an account of the phonetic system, the features of initial consonant, compound vowel and tone of Shaodong Xiang dialects.
