Vocabulary learning is an important part of English learning. At present, some English learners are trying hard to learn vocabulary. But there still exist some erroneous zones, one of which is the overemphasis on the vocabulary learning in intensive reading class to the negligence of vocabulary learning outside the classroom. Besides that, students often learn vocabulary by themselves, not via cooperation.In view of these problems, this thesis makes research into the relation of cooperative learning and English vocabulary acquisition effect via the experiment of extracurricular vocabulary learning among higher vocational students .The purpose of the research is to seek an effective way of extracurricular vocabulary learning, help students grasp a larger English vocabulary and improve their ability to use English. The research aims to find answers to the following three questions: 1.Is it feasible to employ cooperative learning in vocabulary learning of higher vocational students after class? 2.Is there a significant difference in the achievement on vocabulary learning between subjects who learn cooperatively and those who learn individually? 3.Do students hold positive attitude towards cooperative vocabulary-learning after class? In this study the subjects are 62 fresh students (grade 2005) of Jiangxi Vocational and Technical College of Information Application, and are put in two parallel classes. The author singled out these two classes on the base of English level test results before the experiment. Students are divided into experimental group and control group .Students in experimental group study vocabulary from newspapers cooperatively, while students in control group study the same vocabulary via traditional ways. After eight weeks, the author tests two groups on their learning effect. In the research, the author employs test, questionnaire and interview to collect data, both qualitative and quantitative. The research has had the following findings. (1) It is feasible to adopt cooperative learning in extracurricular vocabulary learning among higher vocational college students.
