Level teaching can be defined as teaching that meets the needs of different groups that are grouped based on a certain standard or on a different educational purpose. These groups can develop and improve quickly under proper level teaching strategies and interaction. The ideas of"Education matches with differences of students"and"teaching varies with students", which was the original rationale of level teaching, can be traced back to Confucian thoughts 2000 years ago. In the early 19th century, level teaching was initiated in the U.S.A. and many American schools still keep much of it. But in China, in many areas, because of weak foundational education and little investment, senior high school students find it difficult to learn English well, which also leads to a special phenomenon that teachers pay much but get little. This makes English teachers feel hard to teach English well, which affects the development of English teaching seriously. After a long-time teaching, teachers agree that English level teaching can solve this problem better.During the process of carrying out level teaching, some schools use explicit level teaching, namely, dividing students into different such classes as Olympic contest classes, experimental classes and ordinary classes according to the marks of their entrance examination. This method is very easy to work out; however, it does not take the special features of English into consideration and causes some students to get bad grades. In the thesis, the author analyzes current situations in China. First of all, in practical teaching, educators have to meet the whole class of various backgrounds, interests and learning styles. Secondly, since the reform of schooling, the differences among individuals have been further enlarged. Thirdly, our country is experiencing its eighth reform on curriculum; more attention is drawn to student-centered classes, individualizing instructions. Therefore, how to meet their needs and carry out cooperative study so as to enhance the quality of education becomes the key to the reform. In the thesis, the author takes two of his own classes as experimental samples to do research on the necessity of carrying out English level teaching in senior high schools; meanwhile, the author also puts forward some advice on how to deal with the problems appearing in the process.
