Multi-media in English teaching will be widely-applied in the 21st century, an age of computer. Using multi-media in English teaching provides a good opportunity to facilitate English communication, broaden learners'horizons, and enhance the teaching efficiency. It is desirable for the learners to develop their associative thinking and build their cognitive structure. Although multi-media teaching possesses these unique advantages, it is double-edged. There are still many limitations and misuses. Having a better understanding of it and making an attempt to improve it are the urgent tasks. In addition to that, it is often found that teachers tend to deny or ignore traditional teaching in the multi-media teaching environment.Taking the theories of constructivism and multiple intelligences as the theory background, through questionnaires, I research on the multi-media English teaching in some senior high schools. Combined with my English teaching practice and observations, this paper discusses and analyzes the real situation of present multi-media English teaching in senior high school, and seeks how to carry out the classroom teaching in the multi-media environment. It proposes the way to understand the role of multi-media and traditional teaching. It is argued that multi-media can't replace traditional style of English teaching completely. As teachers, we should integrate multi-media English teaching with traditional English teaching. Meanwhile, we must pay more attention to individuals'development, communication as well as mutual emotions between teachers and students. Multi-media is not the substitute of the blackboard and chalk, nor is the copy or transfer of library. Teachers are not supposed to be slaves of teaching tools, for they are always the organizers and leaders of teaching. Multi-media should be a tool through which teachers and students communicate,and how to use it should depend on the specific situation and requirements of teachers and students. What the paper discusses is not how developed and advanced the teaching tools and equipment can be, but the teaching conception should be updated,the teaching methods should be practical, and the teaching results should be good.
