Kam is the most common language of communication among the Dong ethnicminority. It is still widely used in the Dong areas of China. Ever since mid-lastcentury, there have been many linguists from China, as well as overseas, who havestudied the language in depth. Those studies usually focus on one particular dialect(including the standard dialect), compare Kam with other languages, or describe theKam language and culture. This study will look at the Kam language through thelens of historical linguistics, using a comparative study of the historical phonetic datato discover the patterns of phonetic change.Since the late1950s, the sounds of Kam language in the Chejiang region ofRongjiang county have gone through some changes. The biggest change is in theonset of the syllable structure, then in the rhyme, and then in the tone. Thesephonetic changes were caused by internal linguistic factors, social change, languagecontact, and the attitude of the language users. Most historical phonetic change isdue to language contact between one language and the surrounding languages.Studying these patterns of phonetic change is beneficial for the development ofTai-Kadai language research. This paper is divided into six parts, the first part is theintroduction, analysis of the current status of domestic and foreign research, foundthat Chejiang Kam50years change research has been involved; the second part of theRongjiang Dong each’s language profiles; the third part of the old and new ChejiangKam phonology; the fourth part discusses Chejiang Kam changes, is the main part ofthis paper; the fifth part of the analysis of Chejiang Kam change causes, reveals theevolution rules and conditions; the sixth part is the conclusion.
