Objective: To analyze the risk factors for CAS by investigating the relation between oxidative stress and CAS in population at high risk of ischemic stroke in Fuquan County of Guizhou Province. Methods: One thousand and third two individuals at high risk of ischemic stroke were were screened from 9500 permanent residents of Fuquan County by questionarie investigation, physical examinations, laboratory test, ECG and neck vascular color ultrason-ography. Three hunred and sixty randomly selectd from the 1032 individuals were divided into normal normal carotid artery group(n=78), thickened carotid IMT group(n=131), and CAS group(n=151). At the same time, 100 healthy persons in the People’s Hospital of Guizhou Province were selected as normal control group.Their serum ox-LDL and SOD levels were measured by ELISA. The data were processed by SPSS Software Package(Version17.0). The risk factors for their CAS were analyzed by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis respectively. Results: 1. Detection rates for high-risk populations in this study was 10.8%. The risk factors for stroke respectively were hypertension(45.28%), smoking(40.28%), hyperlipidemia(37.78%), diabetes(22.2%), lack of exercise(20.27%), obesity(18.9%), history of stroke(12.5%), atrial fibrillation(2.2%). 2. The serum ox-LDL level was significantly higher while the serum SOD level was significantly lower in CAS group than in the thickened carotid IMT group, control group and normal carotid artery group(P<0.05). 3. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that age, smoking, hypertension, history of ischemic stroke, and elevated serum FPG, LDL-C, HDL-C, ox-LDL levels were the independentrisk factors for IMT thickening; smoking, hypertension, history of ischemic stroke, and elevated serum FPG, LDL-C, ox-LDL levels were the independent risk factors for CAS.Conclusion: 1. The development of stroke screening work is helpful to provide reliable data for the Chinese stroke data center platform. 2. Age, stroke or family history, smoking, high blood pressure, FPG, ox-LDL were closely related to CAS at the high risk group of stroke, which were the independent risk factors for CAS. 3. Oxidative stress is an important pathogenesis of CAS lesions in high risk population of stroke patients. 4. Good management of population at high-risk of ischemic stroke, active control of risk factors for CAS and oxidative stress can delay the progression of CAS and reduce the incidence of ischemic stroke.
