Task-based Language Teaching(TBLT)can be divided into three phases:pre-task phase, during-task phase and after-task phase. As we all know, a good beginning is half the battle. The Pre-task phase is the preparation for the whole class. So it is very important. There are some ways to prepare the class. Ellis put forward four ways to prepare the class. Basing on Ellis’s summary, this paper is going to combine the first two ways to form a new approach which is "preparing on the basis of small tasks".As to the activities in the pre-task phase, some scholars think some parts of it can be task activities,or all of it are not task activities. But in this paper I choose the task activities in the pre-task phases,so that it can stimulate students’ interest, especially for the teaching practice mainly for children. In order to study the new approach through action research, this paper focuses on the following two aspects:"task-selection" and "task-implementation". The conclusion comes from the process of rinding problems, improving design, teaching, finding new problems and re-improving.Three topics have been chosen in the paper, which includes introducing family members, asking directions and describing the weather. Task selection and task implementation can be shown as follows in these three topics.Topic 1:Small task which is similar to the big task; Teachers’ demonstrationTopic 2:Small task which is similar to the big task; Brainstorming and Teachers’ teachingTopic 3:Small task which is different from the big task; Brainstorming and ActivitiesTo some extent, there are some connection among these three topics. This paper tries to compare the differences between different small tasks and teaching approaches and make some conclusions during the whole process of teaching design, actual teaching and teaching reflection.
