Abstract:There were a few people focus on the study of wording of Hakka dialect, and people concerned on wording study of Hakka dialect dictionaries compiled by overseas missionaries are less. The wording study of Hakka is an inevitable part of the Hakka dialect study. Although some scholars are working on the wording study of Hakka dialect of missionaries’literature currently, but it is not yet systematic and comprehensive enough. There is few scholars study on wording of Hakka dialect of literature compiled by missionaries of the English Presbyterian Mission. It is not only the research gap of Hakka dialects, but also vacancy of character studies.British missionary Donald Maclver (D. MacIver) published A Chinese-English Dictionary; Hakka-Dialect as spoken in Kuangtung Province in 1926, it is the most perfect bilingual dictionary compiled by missionary, more truly reflects the features of pronunciation, vocabulary and dialect wording of Hakka dialect in late 19th and early 20th century. this article takes A Chinese-English Dictionary; Hakka-Dialect as spoken in Kuangtung Province as the center, systematically summarizes the basic types and characteristics of wording of the dictionary, in the second chapter of the article, " Description and quantitative analysis of Hakka dialect wording of the dictionary ", in which the wording example and analysis is the focus of the thesis, in which the Third Section "dialect-popular characters" include a large number of unique wording only showed up in this dictionary but can not be found in other ancient and modern dictionaries. The article also involves the original words of Hakka dialect, synonymic character, characters in popular form, as well as correcting and reinterpretation of the error writing and misinterpret of the words in the dictionary, these related discussion have some significance of studies on dialect phonetic, dialect vocabulary and etymological research.
