| The traditional locomotives have been widely used in the mining equipment industry while their technical limitations and defects have arrested the economic development. The related companies have built technological partnerships with the foreign leading counterpart corporations in order to import the technology and advanced equipments, which involves the translation of technical documents. This translation review aims at studying the English to Chinese translating of the locomotive materials so that professionalism, accuracy and acceptability of target text could be achieved and the first-hand translational experience could be gained.The source text was the brochure of locomotive technical specifications, whose main text function is informative, though it is appealing too. The technical documents are expository and argumentative due to the technical terms, concise expressions, logical structure, and technical subject matter. In light of Newmark’s Communicative Translation, we have attempted to render the exact contextual meaning of the source text in such a way that both content and language are readily acceptable and comprehensible to the targeted technicians. Specifically, we have addressed the translation of technical terms and abbreviations, passive sentences, long and complex sentences, and graphs. it is concluded that division,deletion or addition, and free translation are the most suitable techniques for translating locomotive documents, which guarantees not only, the quality, professionalism and accuracy of the translation. Meanwhile the author’s capability to translate scientific materials has been greatly enhanced, thereby laying a solid foundation for the future career. |
