Objective:The aim of this paper was to understand the effectiveness of peer education on AIDS prevention in a secondary vocational college in Henan. And based on the results, this study discussed and evaluated the effect of AIDS prevention peer education. Methods:I adopted a cluster sampling method in a secondary vocational school in Henan. The students surveyed were selected from 16 secondary vocational classes and 16 college classes in four specialties, including Geological Mineral,Surveying Engineering,Preschool Education and Accounting. All the freshmen of class 1 and sophomores of class 1,from these four departments, were randomly chosen as intervention group, while the students from another 16 classes were chosen as control group. In the intervention group, education volunteers were selected and trained, while peer education program about AIDS prevention was taken to this group. On the contrary, there was no intervention in the control group. The influence,in short-term and long-term(3 months after the intervention),on the two groups was analyzed and discussed. In addition, this paper analyzed the influence of different factors on AIDS peer education, including gender, major, grade, professional level, family location, parents’ education level and family income.Results:1 After peer education intervention, the average awareness rate of AIDS knowledge in the intervention group was 91.40%,while the average positive rate of attitude towards AIDS carriers and patients was 92.83%.And the positive rate of AIDS risk behaviors was 84.39%.These results were significantly higher than the ones from control group,as the corresponding three percentages of the control group were 46.70%,48.25%,and 52.35%,respectively.2 Before and after peer education intervention, the average awareness rates of AIDS knowledge in the intervention group were 44.79% and 91.4%,respectively.Itincreased 46.61%.And the increase of average positive rate of attitude towards AIDS carrier and patients was 45.04%(from 47.79% to 92.83%).The positive rate of AIDS risk behaviors grew up 29.94%(from 54.45% to 84.39).These data showed that the each scores of intervention group had significantly risen.Among them, the awareness rates of AIDS knowledge had the highest increased.3 The results, from AIDS peer education in short-term and long-term testes in intervention group, showed that the average awareness rates of AIDS knowledge were91.40%(in short-term)and 91.75%(in long-term).In addition, the average positive rates of attitude towards AIDS carrier and patients were 92.83% and 92.35%(P>0.05).The positive rates of attitude towards AIDS risk behavior, corresponding the two terms, were 84.39% and 83.94%(P>0.05).The results showed that each scores of short-term test were similar to the long-term ones.Peer education had a stable continuous effect.4 From the analysis of affecting factors,it showed no influence to the effectiveness of AIDS peer education from most of them, including gender, major, grade, family location, parents’ education background and family income. Therefore, peer education had obvious intervention effect on preventing AIDS in secondary vocational schools.Conclusions:1 This study suggests that peer education had obvious intervention effect and stable continuous effectiveness on preventing AIDS work in secondary vocational schools.2 From the results of test students, their understanding and attitude about AIDS knowledge improved better than the behavioral part.Educators should combine other education methods and peer education when they popularized the information about AIDS risk behaviors. This would lead to a better behavior improvement.3 This peer education on AIDS preventing did not differ by gender, major, grade, family location, parents’ education background and family income. Therefore,it has practical significance to carry out a wide range of AIDS peer education in secondary vocational schools.
