Analysis Of Translator's Subjectivity From The Perspective Of George Steiner's Hermeneutic Motion

In traditional translation studies,translators are marginalized with insufficient attention to the most active subject in translation and they are even reduced to “slaves”,“servants”,“tongue men” and so forth.With the advent of the “cultural turn” in translation studies and the development of hermeneutics,the status of translators has been highlighted and translators' subjectivity becomes a focus in the academic circle of translation studies,having thus inspired extensive and in-depth discussions.Hermeneutics,a theory and a philosophy widely accepted as concerning the understanding and interpretation of meaning,has naturally an internal connection with translation.Not only can it help broaden the scope of translation studies,but also constitute a proper theoretical foundation for the research of translators' subjectivity.The subjectivity of translators runs through the whole process of translation,and the full play of translators' subjectivity is one of the key factors that will influence target text readers' reception of translated texts.In the first place,translators' preferences,as well as the evaluation and recognition of the source text dependent on translators' own linguistic and cultural capability,personality,and hobbies determine and demonstrate their “trust” in the source text,thus reflecting translator's subjectivity.Meanwhile,translators' cultural consciousness,and implicit ideology combine to constitute their main approaches of exerting translators' subjectivity as they try to render the source text by “aggressing” into the source text in both linguistic and cultural dimensions.Then translators' subjectivity is disclosed by “incorporating” both the meaning and the form of the source text.Finally,subsequent to “trust”,“aggression” and “incorporation”,the direct “compensation” by adding annotations and the implicit “compensation” between the lines are intended to reconstruct the balance between the target text and the source text,and in this process translators' subjectivity is further embodied by translator's creativity and initiative.In short,due to the openness of the source text,the cultural uniqueness of the target language and translators' historical and partial understanding of the original text,the source text is generally believed to be irreproducible as a whole by translators.Besides,the translations produced by different translators will also exhibit their respective distinct features related to subjectivity.In view of this,this present thesis aims to analyze the two Chinese translations of Lord of the Flies by William Golding from the perspective of George Steiner's fourfold translation motion so as to present the similarities and differences in their translators' subjectivity demonstrated in the process of translation.Hopefully,the present thesis will to a certain degree help promote the development of studies of the subjectivity of translators.
