Grammar refers to the rules of word formation and word arrangement, which is the basis of English learning;Grammar is a very essential part of learning English language knowledge of primary school, and it plays a key role in the process of language learning.According to the Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standard(The Ministry of Education,2011),teaching grammar in primary school is established. However, the current situation of English grammar teaching is not optimistic.Under the influence of traditional teaching methods, teachers attach importance to the recitation and mastery of words and phrases in the process of English teaching, and ignore or avoid the teaching of grammar, which leads to the lack of students' grammar consciousness and the weakness of grammar ability.Based on the noticing hypothesis and the discovery learning theory, the research tries to apply consciousness raising approach to English grammar teaching in primary school, and verifies the effectiveness of the teaching model and its influence on primary school English grammar teaching through experiments.Specifically,it tends to address the following research questions:(1)What is the effect that consciousness raising approach will have on students' grammar knowledge?(2)How does consciousness raising approach affect the students' grammar learning attitudes and methods compared with the traditional teaching method? In this study class one and three of grade five from a primary school in Huai'an are taken as the experimental class and the control class where the teaching experiment lasted for four months. The research process can be divided into three stages: preparation stage, implementation stage and post-implementation stage. In preparation stage, the author analyzed the data collected from grammar scores of pre-test in both the control class and the experimental class. The result illustrates that there is no significant difference on students' grammar ability between the two classes. After that, students in experimental class were asked to fill in the questionnaire on English grammar learning attitude and method.During the implementation stage, students in the experimental class were taught with the consciousness raising method while students in the control class were taught with the traditional teaching method. In post-implementation stage, all the students from the two classes should participate in the post-test.In addition, students in the experimental class were required to fill in the same questionnaire and the author interviewed nine students from the experimental class. The author used the SPSS21.0 software to analyze the data of the tests and questionnaires and recorded some typical answers in the interview. The results of the data are as follows:Firstly, the results in the post-test between the experimental class and the control class showed that there was a significant difference on students' grammar achievement and students' test scores in experimental class were higher than those in the control class. These data revealed that the consciousness raising approach had a positive influence on students' grammar learning compared with the traditional teaching method.Secondly, the results of the questionnaire before and after the experiment indicated that the grammar learning attitude and method of students in the experimental class improved greatly after the experiment. Finally, the author summarized some pedagogical suggestions based on the students' feedback in the interview so as to better apply the consciousness raising approach to grammar teaching. The teacher should design appropriate CR tasks and take students' diversity into consideration.Meanwhile, students are offered with enough room to discover the targeted grammar. In addition,as one of the leading roles in class, the teachers should constantly adjust teaching strategies to the actual learning situations of students.
