With the rapid development of China’s economy,foreign exchanges are also increasing.Since English is still the most widely used language in the world,it is extremely necessary to focus on improving students’ oral communication skills in English teaching.However,in the investigation and research of students,it is found that although students are very interested in learning spoken English and they also have a greater willingness to communicate with others in English,they do not have a lot of spoken material accumulation,so they will not take the initiative to practice spoken English.However,a large number of studies have shown that learning of chunks has a great role in promoting students’ vocabulary acquisition,writing levels and oral expression ability.Based on this,this research will adopt lexical approach and apply it in high school oral English teaching,trying to explore a way that can effectively improve students’ oral English expression ability.This paper aims to answer the following two questions:(1)To what extent can lexical approach improve the fluency of students’ spoken English?(2)To what extent can lexical approach improve the accuracy of students’ spoken English?In order to answer the above questions,the author conducted the research in a municipal high school in southern Ningxia,where the author conducted the educational practice.The research object of this experiment is a class of the first grade with 55 students in total.The author gave out pre-questionnaires and pre-tests to students before the experiment to test their current chunk awareness and usage,and then began the experiment.After the three-month research,the author distributed the post-questionnaires and post-tests to students to test their chunk learning and oral English expression.The results of the research are as follows:(1)The students’ ability to use chunks has been enchanced.After using lexical approach in the class,the usage rate of chunks in their oral expressions has increased significantly.Although the diversity of chunks used has not increased significantly,it has also been improved compared with the experiment before.(2)The fluency of students’ spoken English has improved.Three indicators of oral fluency has been improved,namely articulation rate,phonation/time ratio,mean length of run.Among them,phonation/time ratio and mean length of run have increased significantly compared with the pre-test.(3)The accuracy of students’ spoken English has been enhanced.The proportion of error-free sentences in all sentences has increased significantly.Based on this study,lexical approach in oral teaching helps to improve high school students’ oral expression.Therefore,the author also gives some suggestions on the use of lexical approach.However,this research also has some shortcomings.At the end of the paper,the author reflects on it and put forward some suggestions for improvement.
