A Study Of Translator’s Subjectivity In Ken Liu’s Translation Of Folding Beijing From The Perspective Of Hermeneutic Motion

In 2016,The Three-body Problem and Folding Beijing successively won the Hugo Award,the world’s top science fiction award,marking the significant promotion of Chinese science fiction’s international status.In this process,Ken Liu,the translator of these two works,has made outstanding contributions,whose translation deserves close attention and further exploration.The translator,as it is,is at the very center of translation activities,and the exertion of translator’s subjectivity is of great value to the target text.With the combination of the theoretical perspective of “hermeneutic motion”in George Steiner’s hermeneutic theory,this thesis analyzes translation examples in Folding Beijing ordered by “trust-aggression-incorporation-compensation” and summarizes the translation methods adopted by Ken Liu,thus reflecting the exertion of translator’s subjectivity.By consciously exerting the translator’s subjectivity in the process of translation,Ken Liu realizes the unity of the source and the target text in four aspects: personal understanding,logical structure,cultural background,and aesthetic appreciation.Besides,while retaining traditional Chinese cultural elements,Ken Liu enhances the target text’s readability by combining literal translation with free translation,making the target text better accepted by foreign readers and maintaining the balance between traditional Chinese culture and Western culture.Through the investigation of the translator’s subjectivity exerted in Folding Beijing,the thesis,hopefully,can provide a reference for the future translation of Chinese science fiction.
