The thesis studies the translator's subjectivity from the perspective of hermeneutics, especially from Steiner's hermeneutic motion including: trust, aggression, incorporation and restitution with the comparative study of two versions of Moment in Peking. The aim lies in combining the theories developed from both translation studies and philosophical hermeneutics together, and providing a fresh perspective for study and creation of translation theory.Firstly, the translator's subjectivity and the theoretical framework hermeneutics are introduced briefly. After explaining the relevant definitions of subjectivity, the translator's subjectivity is discussed in four aspects distinctively. After reviewing the origin and development of hermeneutics, the relationship between translation and hermeneutics is illustrated and relevant researches are discussed. Great efforts are made to introduce Steiner's fourfold hermeneutic motion and explain the enlightenments of hermeneutics to translation studies. Finally the thesis makes a comparative study on Moment in Peking in light of the fourfold hermeneutic motion. Finally the conclusion is made: from the perspective of hermeneutics, translation should be understood as the process in which translators understand and interpret initiatively. Thus the translator's subjectivity is the most important factor that affects the product of translation practice.
