A Report On E-C Translation Of Niagara:A History Of The Falls(Chapter Seven)

The Niagara Falls,located at the junction of Ontario,Canada and New York,USA,is the general name of three waterfalls on Niagara River in the Great Lakes Region of North America,with an average flow of 2,407 cubic meters per second.The Niagara Falls,the Iguazu Falls and the Victoria Falls are called the world’s three major transnational waterfalls.The Falls is famous for its beautiful scenery,huge hydropower capacity and challenging environmental protection projects,and is a very popular tourist attraction for tourists.The abundant tourism resources and water energy of the Niagara Falls have been well developed and utilized,and the utilization of which provides a good reference for how to develop our country’s rich natural resources.This is a project report on the E-C translation of Niagara: A History of the Falls(Chapter Seven).As a documentary text,this book,written by Pierre Berton,mainly shows readers the natural scenery and geographical features of Niagara,and the exploitation and utilization of its natural resources by different historical figures in different periods.The documentary text aims to state the facts to readers.For this reason,the language of this book is vivid and concise,which describes some historical events objectively,and also involves many people names,place names,professional vocabulary and expressions in related fields.In this report,the translator chooses chapter seven of Niagara: A History of the Falls as the source text.Guided by Skopos theory and its three rules: the skopos rule,coherent rule and fidelity rule,the translator makes a comparative analysis of the differences between English and Chinese,and uses translation methods such as omission,amplification and division etc.to make the translation coherent and smooth,which is faithful to the source text and conforms to the expression habits of the target language.This report is composed of five chapters.The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the translation project,which involves the rationale for taking chapter seven from Niagara: A History of the Falls as the source text of translation,as well as the purpose and significance.The second chapter refers to the process description of translating this text,including pre-task preparation,translation process and relevant issues after translation.Then chapter three elaborates the translation theory--Skopos theory used in the report and recounts the research trend and development status of the Chinese translation practice of texts as Niagara: A History of the Falls.The fourth chapter mainly focuses on the analysis of typical cases and the translation skills applied to solve problems faced in the translation practice from the lexical level and syntactic level,with the guidance of Skopos theory.The last chapter summarizes the experience gained from the translation practice and the unsolved problems in the report.Besides,it also sums up the harvest the translator reaped and the enlightenment and plans for future.Under the guidance of the Skopos theory,this report has found out some effective translation approaches and adopted some translation methods to solve the difficulties in translating this kind of expressive texts,hoping to provide a reference for future translation research and practice.
