A Report On Translation Of The Power Of Strangers（chapters 1-3）

This report is written based on the translation of The Power of Strangers（Chapters1-3）by Joe Keohane,an American journalist.The book,published in July,2021,is about how Keohane,influenced by his parents and his career experiences,wrote a book on how to talk with strangers.With recording many interesting stories of stranger in his interviews and cutting-edge research results in social psychology,this book is expected to provide valuable suggestions in improving the social networks in the current situation of our joint effort to combat COVID-19.The translation is conducted under the guidance of the Skopos theory.The core of Skopos theory is that translators select specific translation strategies and methods according to specific translation purposes.Therefore,the translator has to analyze and clarify the features and functions of the documentary writing and further understand its different translation purposes,so as to flexibly adopt corresponding translation strategies for the difficulties arising in translation.The report is divided into five chapters.Chapter One is the task description,which introduces the source of the task and the language features of documentary writings.Chapter Two is the description of the translation process,including the preparations before translation,translation process and the revision.Chapter Three is the guiding theory for this translation,which mainly elaborates on the three rules of the Skopos theory.Chapter Four,with the guidance the Skopos theory and its three rules,analyzes the cases and classifies the difficulties emerging in the translation and offers strategies,such as amplification,free translation,division,inversion,annotation and literal translation.Chapter Five is the conclusion,summarizing the application of the Skopos theory and the translator?s own lessons and experience in this translation.The translator hopes it can give some references to the translation of such similar texts.
