Desert tourism has gradually emerged with the changes in travelers’ travel concepts, travel preferences and travel consumption patterns, but the special nature of the natural environment in desert areas and the strong experiential nature of desert tourism activities make it a type of tourism that is prone to safety accidents. The serious security situation poses a threat to the safety of desert tourists and also discourages a large number of ordinary people from desert tourism, which seriously affects the sustainable development of desert tourism.Based on this, this study uses content analysis and rooting theory, takes desert tourism safety accident cases as the research object, follows the research idea of "describe the phenomena-analyze the causes-propose strategies",conducts systematic research on the phenomenal characterization, formation mechanism and prevention strategies of desert tourism safety accidents, and provides effective suggestions for strengthening desert tourism safety accident prevention.First, using content analysis method, with the help of Excell,Arcgis,Ucinet and other analysis software to extract and analyze the accident type, time, space and other characteristics of the desert tourism safety accident cases,to clarify the basic characteristics of the accident and the law of occurrence.Secondly, using the research method of rooting theory, the content of accident causes in accident cases was analyzed qualitatively with the help of Nvivo11 software, and the main influencing factors of desert tourism safety accidents were explored, and on the basis of sorting out the interrelationship between the influencing factors, the formation mechanism model of desert tourism safety accidents was constructed by combining the accident causal chain theory. Finally, with the help of systemic safety theory and the results of the research on accident phenomena and causes,we proposed the prevention strategies for desert tourism safety accidents from four perspectives: human, machine, environment, and management,in two perspectives: management level and tourist level. The research findings are briefly described as follows:(1)Basic characteristics and occurrence rules of desert tourism safety accidents:There are various types of desert tourism safety accidents, mainly including six types of accidents: trapped, overturned, disoriented, lost, sudden illness, and lost property. In addition, desert tourism safety accidents have obvious spatial and temporal distribution characteristics, and there is a certain correlation between safety accident types and spatial and temporal factors.(2)Influencing factors and formation mechanism of desert tourism safety accidents:Desert tourism safety accidents are mainly influenced by three factors: personnel, equipment and environment. At the same time, there is a certain interrelationship between the constituent elements of desert tourism safety accidents, and the occurrence of accidents is the result of the joint action of several elements. The occurrence of desert tourism safety accidents follows the basic path of "risk generation-hidden danger formation-accident occurrence".(3)Prevention strategies of desert tourism safety accidents: Combining the above research results, the prevention strategies of desert tourism safety accidents are proposed. The management level should strengthen the risk prevention before the accident and reduce the degree of harm after the accident by standardizing the safety risk control, sounding the safety information early warning forecast, strengthening the safety risk information notification, and establishing the joint rescue system. The tourist level should strengthen the risk prevention of personnel, equipment and environment by improving self-safety awareness, actively carrying out pre-trip preparation and reducing unsafe behavior.
