ObjectiveTo explore the effect of Motivational Interviewing on postoperative functional exercise compliance of breast cancer patients. The aim was to improve the compliance of postoperative functional exercise for breast cancer patients, promote the recovery of upper limb function and improve their quality of life.MethodsFrom March 2022 to October 2022,76 patients with breast cancer surgery in the breast surgery ward of a tertiary care hospital in Lanzhou,Gansu Province were included and divided into a test group and a control group, with 38 cases in each group. After baseline assessment, the control group was given health education on the day of admission, the day of discharge, and before the 1st,2nd,3rd and 4th chemotherapy sessions using conventional methods, while the experimental group was given health education +motivational interview at the same time. The motivational interview was conducted by a trained researcher on a one-to-one basis. The six interview topics were Introduction and Focus,Evocation and Planning,Adjustment to the Plan,Assessment and Feedback,Consolidation of Success and Confidence and Desire, and each interview lasted 20 to30 minutes. The researcher measured patients’ compliance, functional status of the affected limb, shoulder mobility and quality of life using the Functional Exercise Adherence Scale for Postoperative Breast Cancer Patients,Short Form Scale for Functional Impairment of the Affected Limb,Shoulder Mobility Scale and Breast Cancer Quality of Life Measurement Scale immediately after the intervention,4 weeks after the intervention and 8 weeks after the intervention respectively to analyse the effect of motivational interviewing.A repeated-measures ANOVA was used to compare the change in functional exercise compliance, change in functional impairment score of the affected limb, change in shoulder mobility score and change in quality of life score between the two groups at three follow-ups after the intervention.P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.ResultsDuring the study, five patients were lost to follow-up in the trial group and four in the control group. At the three follow-ups,the patients in the trial group had higher functional exercise compliance scores(F=28.561,P < 0.05)and higher shoulder mobility scores(F=3.971,P<0.05)than the control group;the functional impairment scores of the affected limbs in the trial group were lower than those in the control group(F=132.361,P<0.05);the difference in quality of life scores between the two groups was not significant(F=2.634,P>0.05).ConclusionMotivational interviewing can improve the postoperative functional exercise compliance of breast cancer patients, and can promote the recovery of upper limb function and shoulder joint mobility, and the effect on the improvement of postoperative quality of life is yet to be verified. |
