A Translation Report On News Of China Daily Based On Communicative Translation Theory

With the continuous development of the Internet and other emerging media,news has become the main medium for the public to follow the latest developments in world affairs.News can not only enable people to get more international news information from the outside world but also help countries to deepen their understanding of each other.Due to the varying levels of English proficiency of Chinese news readers,many of them rely on translated versions of news from western mainstream media.If the translation fails to accurately convey the information of the source text and does not conform to the linguistic and textual norms of the target language,it will reduce the credibility of news and even create or deepen the misunderstanding between countries.Therefore,it is necessary to study the translation of news.Based on the author’s translation practice of news during her internship in China Daily,this report endeavors to solve the typical problems in the E-C translation of news under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative theory.Based on her translation practice,the author summarizes typical translation problems as follows:at the lexical level,there are often redundant words and words with multiple meanings in the source text,and the conversion of part of speech may also pose challenges;at the syntactic level,the passive voice is sometimes improperly translated and the non-predicative structure is mistranslated;at the textual level,the long and difficult sentences are improperly divided and the information lacks cohesion.Guided by Newmark’s communicative theory,the author solves the typical problems of E-C translation of news by applying the following techniques:at the lexical level,deleting redundant words and clarifying words with multiple meanings by selecting appropriate word meanings;at the syntactic level,adopting such translation methods as direct translation,conversion and amplification;at the textual level,mainly adopting the translation technique of amplification.This report selects 19 case sentences from the source text for analysis,and finally concludes that the application of communicative theory can help to produce better communicative effects in the translation of news.This report aims to provide some insights into news translation,help improve its quality and provide reference for other translators.
