| During the Tang and Song dynasties,Buddhism in Guilin flourished,and monastery repair and statue-making activities flourished.Xiqinglin Temple,one of the five great Zen forests in the south at that time,was strong when a series of bas-reliefs on precipices were excavated on the peaks of Western Mountain,which were the first Buddhist statues in Guilin.Today the monastery has faded away,but the statues on the West Mountain have witnessed the prosperity to decline of Guilin Buddhism.Scholars’ attention to Buddhist bas-reliefs on precipices in Guilin began in the late 1930s,but not many studies have followed.This paper will rely on documentary records to sort out the background of the development of Buddhism in Guilin region.Positive or negative influence on Buddhism in the social environment,and the appropriate environment created by local officials for the development of Buddhism in Guilin region,and further explore the significance of Buddhism in Guangxi to the ideology and culture of Guilin region.Focuses on the development and artistic legacy of Buddhist art in the Guilin region.Describes the various temples and grottoes built and excavated at the time.The Western Mountain bas-reliefs on precipices is closely related to the Xiqinglin Temple of the Tang Dynasty,and the author conducted research at the temple site and interviewed the abbot of Fazang Temple on related issues.The paper then proceeds to explore the origin of the Guilin cliff-art style,explore its transmission path,and analyze the changes in the style of the art of statue-making after it was influenced by the Buddhist art of statue-making in India and the Central Plains.Combining the relevant literature of previous studies and the results of field investigations,the bas-reliefs on precipices and statue inscriptions in the Western Mountain of Guilin area are examined comprehensively.The situation of the bas-reliefs on precipices in the Western Mountain of Guilin is reviewed,with particular attention to the lotus pedestal statues with the same stem,and the origin and rise and fall of Buddhism in Guilin is analyzed with regard to the special style of lotus pedestal with the same stem in the statues.Several typical examples of lotus pedestals with the same stem in Western Mountain are described in order to provide more arguments for the transmission of Buddhism in Guilin.Finally,the style of lotus pedestal with the same stem is studied retrospectively to discover its connection with the fifty Bodhisattva statues of Amitabha Buddha and the Shwedagon variation statues,and the similarities and changes between them are identified by comparing the Western Mountain bas-reliefs on precipices with those of domestic and foreign regions.In this paper,the study of Western Mountain bas-reliefs on precipices in Guilin is carried out in pictorial and archaeological researches,and the types and sources of statues are further explored on the basis of supplementing the data of statues in Guilin area.The study of Western Mountain bas-reliefs on precipices will further reveal the historical and cultural significance of Buddhist statues in the south,make people pay attention to and protect the bas-reliefs on precipices and related cultural heritage,and contribute to the aspect of cultural exchange and nationalized development of art. |
