A Report On E-C Translation Of Parentheses In The Biographical Texts From The Perspective Of Text Typology Theory

Authenticity and literariness are characteristics of biography,a narrative literature.They should be considered fully in translation,to achieve its literariness while preserving its authenticity.The text chosen to be translated is Chapter Three(Ernest Hemingway)in Celia M.Wallhead’s biographical work,Writers of the Spanish Civil War.Many parentheses exist in sentences in the source text and they interrupt the original sentence order,easily resulting in semantic confusion and translation difficulties for the translator.In addition,fewer studies focus on parentheses translation in biographical texts,and the report aims to further explore the E-C translation methods of parentheses in biographies based upon Newmark’s text typology theory.As a major feature of English,these flexible and versatile parentheses play a critical role in adding supplementary information and expressing the author’s opinions.According to Newmark’s text typology theory,the translator divides the parentheses into three categories:informative,expressive and vocative parentheses and uses six translation methods:zero-processing,annotation,addition,inversion,reconstruction and cutting.Through case analysis,the translator argues that for the informative parenthesis in the biography,priorities are given to convey the information accurately and clearly,emphasize the historical authenticity of the biography.In terms of unclear original information,it should be carefully verified and translated based on historical facts.For the expressive parenthesis in the biography,the emotions and aesthetic of the source text are preserved in translation to make translation more genuine for readers.For the vocative parenthesis in the biography,the translator should grasp the source text author’s intention truly,and depict characters and scenes of the source text vividly,thus making translation similar understandable for readers.Under the guidance of text typology theory,the translator comprehensively considers the definition and function of parentheses and chooses different translation methods in order to provide a new perspective for the future practice of parentheses translation in biographical texts.
