The Research On Strategies For Verbalization In Social Science Translation Under The Guidance Of Class Shifts

Social science books help people have efficient learning in history,politics and culture,and Western philosophy texts have gained popularity particularly in recent years.An Introduction to the Philosophical Life written by Edward F.Mc Gushin is classified as a social science text,which elaborates Foucault’s archaeological and genealogical analysis on two major concepts: “epimēleiaheautou” and “parrhēsia”.Chapter six,“The Prince and the Pastor:Figures of Power,Care,and Parrhēsia”,is selected as the original text of translation practice which this report is based on,discussing the importance of the art of governance in the context of the expanding of the pastoral power in classical Europe.Based on Catford’s Class Shifts Theory,this translation practice report compares the differences at the structural and grammatical level from the perspective of English-Chinese contrast,intending to investigate the strategies for verbalization used in English to Chinese translation of social science texts.The verbalization strategy studied in this report belongs to the category of class shifts.Referring to Zhu Yongsheng’s concept of “verbalization” and Liu Miqing’s classification of lexical transformation,this report classifies the strategy into four types,which are the verbalization of nouns,the verbalization of adverbs,the verbalization of adjectives and the verbalization of prepositions.This report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter briefly introduces the research background and analyzes the characteristics of the source text.Chapter two describes the process of translation,which involves pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.Chapter three provides the theoretical framework,aiming to describe the applicability of both class shifts and verbalization strategy in social science translation.In chapter four,the translation methods under the guidance of the Class Shifts are analyzed and some examples are give.Furthermore,based on the theoretical framework,the deep analysis is made on the translation examples.In chapter five,discoveries are summarized,along with shortcomings in the translation practice.
