The climate problem has been discussed by people widely, and scientists try to analyze the causes of the climate problems from different perspectives. The academic texts have various characteristics, such as objectivity, expertise, logic, and innovation. The original text of this translation report is selected from chapters one and two of the New Climate War.This report compares climate to a war,and focuses on the causes and the aftermath of this climate war from economic, social and scientific aspects.Different from the general science texts, the social science texts contain a mixed types of the texts, instead of the single “informative”.The texts selected for this report are characterized by a combination of “informational texts” and “vocative texts”.The difficulties in translation mainly lie in the fact that the text contains a large number of names of organizations and authoritative magazines, complicated word imagery and sentence structure, and weak connection between short sentences. This report is based on the Text Typology and guided by the three principles of Skopos Theory to summarize the problems encountered in translating such social science texts and to find solutions to similar problems. It takes a two-step method which is adopted at the lexical, syntactic and textual levels: determining the text type and author’s intention, followed by the selection of appropriate translation techniques. For both types of texts, the author makes extensive use of literal translation, free translation and conversion at the lexical level, division, restructuring and omission at the syntactic level, and repetition to enhance the readability of the translation at the textual level. This report selects cases from social science texts. It can be found that after the text type analysis, the expressive intention of the text can be determined, and then the purpose of translation can be determined. This report match the text with appropriate translation techniques,so as to provide the target language readers with a better reading experience and cultural transmission.
