The product structure and its manufacturing process are being changed sharply due to the emerging of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, so does mold industry. It should be adjusted to the situation.in design technology, machining process and manufacturing mode.The main factors which restrict the advance of mold industry are: quality, cost and time limit. Now time limit has become the key factor for mold factories to develop markets and win orders, so it is important to raise the standardization lever of mold design and manufacturing, reduce repetition work and improve working efficiency. At the same time, standardization of mold design and manufacturing is required when the CAD or CAPP system for injection mold are developed.Based on above-mentioned understanding, Group Technology (GT) is combined with the standardization technology in this paper, and the standardization system of design and manufacturing of injection mold is studied thoroughly.Firstly, the structure of injection mold is analyzed by use of GT, mold parts are classified to 4 types of ones: cavity or core, mold plate, structure and standard parts. The structure characteristics of 4 kinds of parts are introduced, and the ways to mark them are discussed. And then a classification and coding system for injection mold is established.Secondly, calculating methods of working dimensions for molding parts are discussed, the comparative rules for the calculating methods are put forward. Using these rules, some comparison can be made between these calculating methods, the results show that the intermediate tolerance calculating method is the best to satisfy the demand of the dimension precision of plastic parts.Thirdly, based on the classification and coding system, the parameter choosing principle that the chosen parameters of mold parts are corresponding to its codes is proposed. On the basic of it, the three dimension parameter drawing database is set up.Finally, according to process characteristics of mold parts and the cardinal principle of CAPP, the frame of the CAPP system and the functional modules are proposed. The classification and coding system is used to solve problems of the part information describing and inputting. The data model, database design and management of CAPP are studied, and the design mode of an open style database is explored. Many kinds of process database, including standard and typical process library, are established. And then a CAPP system of injection mold is developed.
