In the field of cultural study, there was little research on the evolution of the grass elements in Chinese architectural landscapes, which actually values deeper researches because of its typicality and universality. The subject matter concerned in this paper is that the grass elements were introduced into various landscapes with the obvious trace of Western "civilization" in the previous reformations of Chinese society since late Qing Dynasty. From this point, this paper historically revealed the specificity of the interaction between Chinese and Western culture. With reference to traditional etiquette and folk legends, Temple of Heaven, as a specific case in this paper, was discovered to be gradually closing to the public from royal monopoly with grass elements were embedded; Subsequently, with reference to the "growth" progress of grass elements in colonial landscapes in Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin, this paper revealed that what is at the back of the growth and alternation relationships between weeds, wild grasses, green grass and lawn is the competition and resistance of all classes of society at the level of mentality and value in different periods from late Qing Dynasty to now.In addition, the construction of various public landscapes are also speeding up with the deepening progress of Chinese internationalization degree, which is superficially shown as the homogenization of grass elements in landscapes, but actually the appeal of cultural competition hidden at the back. What’s more, both China and America were once colonized. Through the respective comparison of interactive histories of culture and landscapes between America and China and between Britain and America, the author found that the "growth" progress of the grass in China and America were structurally similar; Thereby, this paper carried out some introspection on colonialism and nationality and discovered that Americans developed and output their own new culture after the same colonial experience as Chinese, but some Chinese are still focusing on nationalism. In this research, the author revealed the time specificity and complexity of cultural progress and the features of post-colonial culture, which are expected to facility the further development of Chinese culture.
