Rapid response to mechanical product market is the focus of competition with the trend of Mass Customization (MC). Product design is play an important role in quick delivery and product innovation. Motorcycle industry, one of Chinese economic backbone, is facing great challenges in global competition. In this dissertation, rapid design strategy with its supporting techniques -- Platform Design For Variety(PDFV),Variant Design(VD), Configure Design(CD) is developed in the context of motorcycle product design and developed under MC condition. The dissertation first reviews the research on MC, then a systematic and thorough research on product family Design for mechanic is carried out under Chinese national condition with the strategy of "theory discussion + application verification". The main aim of this dissertation is to improve competition in mechanical product market with the trend of globalization of economy. The main contribution of this dissertation are as follows: 1) Enrich and Perfect theory of product family Design for mechanics .2) Shorten mechanical product development period .3) Improve product design quality. 3). Reduce product development cost. 4) Enhance ability of rapid response to market. After analyzing the feature of product development process and the problems in design phrase. Product design process based on single product development strategy is improved, and product design process model based on platform development strategy and facing MC is proposed. Three phases of Prototype Design, Platform Design For Variety,Product Family Design are given. "PDFV+VD+CD" brought out in this dissertation becomes a key technology for implementing MC. They integrate together to realize design facing product family. The main efforts and contribution of this dissertation are PDFV, because it is a key for technology reuse and a key for realization of technology transfer. A robust platform is not only the heart of product family, but also foundation of product family. The research on PDFV as follows: 1) The theory of PDFV is studied, and it provides variety index and coupling index as the direction tools of PDFV, and provides modularization design and standardization design as the supporting tools of PDFV. Marketing data and engineering specifications are analyzed, and the extended QFD is provided; varietyindex uses extended QFD to guide the team in lessening the impact of generational variety on the company; variety index as an indicator of components will indicate which component is likely to change due to external drivers, it can help team develop a Platform-Based-Variant-Design which suits future market change. Due to internal drivers, the change of one component will result in corresponding change of another component, coupling index therefore is acted as an indicator of connection strength between the components, it can measure how tightly coupled design is; it also explicitly lists the specifications which will need to be exchanged between the different component designers. Modularization design and standardization design are given to reduce the impact of internal drivers and external drivers, so as to shorten development time and rapid response to market. 2) With the strategy of "theory discussion + prototype research +application verification", a structure of motorcycle platform for development team is carried out on the basis of reducing variety cost. 3) The assessment methods for PDFV efficiency are provided.With the analysis of structure tree for variety product and Configuration rule, a dynamic product module Based-Variant-Design is brought out. Based on this model, product family is formed by CD which not only maintains BOM steadiness, but also makes product appear variety. In this way, it will reduce BOM maintenance work and avoid BOM rework, it will also realize rapid design and rapid response according to customer need, and accomplish PDFV transfer to product family design.
