Green manufacturing is an international cutting-edge area formed by the deeply crossing of manufacturing science, environment science and management science. Green manufacturing embodies human sustainable development strategy in modern manufacturing industry, and is considered as one of the key approaches to solving the environmental pollution problem in manufacturing industry by controlling from pollution source. Although the present researches on green manufacturing develop very fast, there are still a lot of problems need go deep.Manufacturing process is a main stage in the product life cycle, which directly consumes resources and releases environmental wastes. Process planning is used to analyze and plan processes, setups, process parameters, etc for manufacturing processes. It influences the productivity, quality, cost, resource consumption and environmental impact of product manufacturing process. Process planning for green manufacturing is a key approach to optimizing and improving the environmental friendliness. In this dissertation, the process planning for green manufacturing and some of its key technologies are discussed.Firstly, based on the introduction of the basic concepts of process planning, the situation of resource consumption and environmental impact in processes, and the traits of green manufacturing, the connotation and system structure of process planning for green manufacturing are discussed, and the technology contents of process planning for green manufacturing are presented too. It is pointed out in chapter 3 that process planning actually is made up of serials of decision-making processes. The decision-making problems include process route, process method, process dimension, process setups, cutting fluid and process parameter, etc. And the decision-making theory model and application model set are established to support process planning for green manufacturing. A process planning method for green manufacturing based on decision-making model set are also presented. Machine tool is the executor of processes, which has large impact on the energy consumption, secondary material consumption, noise, security, recycling of scraps, and waste emissions. In chapter 4, the optimizing of machine tool configuration for green manufacturing in process planning is discussed. The machine tool selection model of single part and multiple machine tools is established. An energy saving & noise reduction scheduling method is presented to configure multiple machine tools to multiple parts.One of the imperative problems in the process planning for green manufacturing is to make a quantitative description and evaluation of the resource consumption and environmental impact during the manufacturing processes. In chapter 5, the resource consumption and environmental impact of machining process are analyzed. Based on process IPO (input-process-output) models, a method to analyze and evaluate the resource consumption and environmental impact in manufacturing is presented, and its technical framework is setup too. In chapter 6, a software tool named as green manufacturing oriented process planning application supporting system (GMPPASS) is introduced, which is developed on basis of the fruits in the dissertation. The software was certificated by national intellectual property office, and obtained the copy right in June 2003. It can be used to aid technologists to analyze the resource consumption and environmental impact of manufacturing processes, and make process planning for green manufacturing. Some process data on resource consumption and environmental impact are provided too.
