With the fast development of social economy and the continuous improvement of the living standard, people have more high-level demands for the cultural life and living environment. To get the destination is not the only purpose for people's traveling, it is becoming important to enjoy themselves during the journey. Therefore, we should make our road ways to recreation and pleasure. Therefore, highway construction, especially high-grade highway construction should introduce environmental protection, aesthetics and humane concept under the condition of safety, utility and recreation. This is the embodiment of design for people and sustainable development. So highway landscape is regarded as an important content to consider. This research is launched under this background, and on one hand it can improve the highway communication security and improve environment of driving, on the other hand it is able to promote the harmonious development between people and nature. This research is based on transportation engineering, Landscape Architecture, architecture, psychology sociology and economics, etc. At the foundations of sustainable development and the principle of people first, the research has proposed the landscape design theory of highway and defined its meaning clearly for the first time, construct the frame of this theory, and analyzed the hierarchical structure of the theory from the systematic angle. The foundation stone have been established in order to study the landscape problem of the highway further in the future. In the frame of landscape design theory of highway, the dissertation introduced the design principle of landscape design and three respects are laid as key research: Firstly, highway landscape array. The landscape array of several-section mode get extensive and ripe application in the design of garden, some designers apply this array mode mechanically in the landscape design of the highway at present. After comparing similarities and differences between a highway and a garden, It was proposed that it is improper to apply the several-section array mode to the design of the highway landscape. And the brand-new "tensity-relaxation mode" array model has been put forward, which is suitable for the landscape design of highway. The rational length of single landscape of straight highway section is put forward after analyzing the single landscape section and the visual characteristic of drivers and passengers. Secondly, the relationship between the space measure of structure along highway and the reasonable distance from highway. The peripheral space beside highway takes advantage of important influence to the drivers and passengers. This research introduces the experiment method usually using in the architecture and behavior art to the transportation engineering field for the first time. By using the method combining three-dimensional dynamic simulation with experiment questionnaire, "semi-ginkgo leaf" model is established to describe the relationship of space measure of structure and the distance from highway. For the first time from the model an important conclusion can be drawn approximately. That is the structure within 50m from the highway, the size is extremely sensitive to people; between 50m to 100m, comparative sensitive; beyond 100m, sensitiveness is bad. Thirdly, minimum length of straight line between same direction adjacent curves. Highway alignment occupies important status in the landscape design of highway, and the minimum length of straight line between same direction adjacent curves is worthy to be discussed. "Design specification for highway Route (JTJ011-94)" is proposed: for the highway where the design speed is greater than 60km/h, the length is 6V because it looks like a reverse curve, namely "broken curve". However, the design speed, V is different value to different grade highway; this length of straight line will change. But the visual effect of "broken curve" can only be a certain range confirmed, but not changing, so the index value provided by "specification" makes people query.
