From the perspective of theoretical analysis and practical observation, the dissertation discusses some representatively formal design strategies that play important roles in the turn of contemporary western architecture. In the pluralistic background, the author tries to pick up several groups of formal operation strategies that each group has similar characters or genealogical relationship in the goals, methods and theoretical base. There are five groups: 1. The generation and transformation of archetype or structure. In this group we analyze the methods of typology, structuralism architecture and Eismenn's syntax architecture. 2. Heterogeneity strategies which include collage, superimposition and smooth mixture. 3. Surrealist realism. In this group we discuss the new strategies of Tschumi and Koolhaas who created new modes of program and space that are based on social reality of the post-capitalism. 4. Topologic transformation strategies that are connected with digital technology, complexity theory and new geometry, has produced new architecture form. 5. This group describes the architectural phenomenons that reflect the attention about the surface of building. Although the dissertation is just a fragmental research, those formal operation strategies that are summed up in this dissertation still can reflect the tendency of contemporary western architecture.
