The performance of all the activities in the process of manufacturing is improved making use of web-related technologies in the environment of Networked Manufacturing (NM). Product development activity benefits deeply from NM. The inherent and extrinsic quality of product and life-force of enterprise are determined by product development. Both runtime mode and outside environment of product development are changed in the NM environment. Enterprise needs new methods to resolve new problems for the success of product development. All the above factors make companies and searchers of home and oversea focus on how to optimize the product development process in the increasingly complex and distributed NM environments.NM has given rise to new requirement and effect on product development, so the technology of product development process management (ePDP) is researched deeply in this paper. The architecture of the product development process management system is established based on the analysis of its requirement. Then, the key technologies of ePDP are studied, including product development process modeling method, product development process planning method and product development process control method. The main research works and achievements in the paper are as follows:(1) The most important three demands of product development process management system in NM environment (ePDP) are the customized and objective-oriented PDP model, collaborative PDP planning and rapid response to inner and outer states changes of process performance. Based on those requirements, the scenario view of ePDP, logic application architecture and technical application architecture are set up. The methods and key technologies for the development of prototype system are analyzed.(2) The main approaches of the ePDP research are as follows. Firstly, the main body of system is confirmed. Secondly, the demands of main body are studied. Thirdly, the evaluation criterion is proposed. Lastly, the solution is illustrated. Based on this methodology, process modeling of ePDP is deeply researched. CPEMAO method of product development process modeling including six views is proposed. The six views of CPEMAO express comprehensively the information concerned by the related main bodies. The six views describe a comprehensive and effective abstract PDP model.(3) After analyzing the principles of PDP planning in the NM environment, this paper solves the whole performance optimum problem considering extended enterprises, project portfolio, and inner product development project in a high uncertain and dynamic product development environment. The two-way choice method is proposed, in which Co-partners provide multi-period and multi-parameter solutions according to the parameter of the leaderenterprise of NM extended enterprise.(4) PDP control principle is researched systematically applying CYBERNETICS, including the controlled object of PDP, the controlled objectives and effectiveness, the controlled mechanism, and the general controlled process. On the basis of CPEMAO modeling method, the expression and measurement method of state of controlled objectives, the approach of collecting the performance information of controlled objectives and the method of adjusting PDP program are discussed.(5) A prototype f ePDP is established to validate the above theory and method. This system can support seamless integration of systems of co-partner in NM extended enterprise. It is a distributed collaborative PDP operated by users from various departments within the company as well as users from supplier, manufacturing partner, and customer communities. It can control and optimize the collaborative process between companies and other units. Also, it can reduce the time and the cost for developing product and finally improve the ability of innovation of companies.
