In the process of urban renovation, traditional cities are being gradually abandoned, and the appearances of streets are becoming disorder and prominently problematic. In this case, the purpose of this dissertation is to reunderstand the urban spatial form under the background of commercial society, meanwhile to find methods of solving the problems of urban streets. This will be a further development of traditional urban design theory. However, since the conclusion of surface-layer of this dissertation is merely a viewpoint instead of a theoretical system, it can instruct analysis but unnecessarily can draw out a systemic operational model.Firstly, the public area between buildings and a street is defined as surface-layer,which is different from the previous acknowledgements of elevation, boundary, interface, external space, etc. With this definition, and by considering the commercial culture, it is pointed out that contemporary cities have the tendency of surface layering under the influence of commercial culture.Secondly, by analyzing the surface-layer from the aspects of element composition, time composition, structure composition and function composition, it can be found that four essential characters of surface-layer, which are timeliness, diversity, unification and stability, fit on the deep urban structures in a certain degree. The different appearances of surface-layer result from the mutual effects of various colonies and deep-level elements of environment, society, economy, technology, behavior and etc.Thirdly, the phenomenon of surface-layer alienation is criticized. Surface-layer alienation happens because the actual study on concrete objects is less in the process of modern design, with which the design detaches from the background of here and now. An efficient urban renovation should well organize the surface-layer, and make its structure clear and sustainable. In this dissertation, the surface-layer of several typical shopping streets in China andaboard are investigated and analyzed step by step, which from the element composition to the characters of surface-layer, and finally to the influential elements.Through the analysis and considerations above, conclusions are drawn out: People obtain the urban image mainly from the surface-layer. The surface-layer closely relates to the deep-layer of a city, and is the reflection of the urban internal order. Therefore the deep urban structure can be discerned through the surface-layer, and the operation of surface-layer is actually the reorganization of urban structure. Finally in this dissertation an open design model for setting up the street identity is explored.
